Dipont Fellows
In September 2009, we launched a new programme designed to help Chinese students in our centres better understand the American college application process and life at college. Dipont Fellows (DFs) are assigned to work at our A-Level and AP Centers in cities such as Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Nanjing, Beijing, and Ningbo and work within a dedicated team of Chinese and foreign teaching and counseling staff for one academic year. Dipont employ experienced college counselors from Chinese and American backgrounds who guide students through the selection and application process for international universities. Dipont Fellows provide support to our college counselors to give students in the advanced college counseling program the best possible chance of success at an American university, in terms of both their academic and personal development.
Specifics
College application support – DFs work one-on-one with our grade 12 students to help them brainstorm and refine their independently-written college application essays. After students finish their college applications, DFs run workshops and activities with them geared towards U.S. cultural awareness and acclimatization.
Cultural acclimatization – While our centers aim to give students the best possible preparation for life and study abroad, inevitably there is quite a large adjustment required of students when they leave China for college in the U.S. One of the most important and interesting aspects of the DF role will simply be to talk to students about life at an American university and answer their questions about your own experience. DFs act as a link to campus life in the U.S., providing an insight into American history, culture, and society.
College Skills/ College Life – Dipont Fellows run regular activities with students (often in grade 10) geared towards helping them develop the skills they will need to be successful in the American classroom. DFs select readings and develop a plan that incorporates student discussion, critical thinking, public speaking and presentations skills, and information about American culture, history, literature, and higher education.
DFs also run regular activities with students (often in grade 11) geared towards helping them develop their English writing skills and preparing for and learning about college in the United States. DFs plan and present writing workshops and speak to students in groups and individually about topics such as college choice, making applications, writing personal statements, and choosing a major.
