A Level Biology

Overview of the course

The CIE Biology course provides, through well-designed studies of experimental and practical biological science, a worthwhile educational experience for all students whether or not they go on to study science beyond this level. In particular, the subject enables them to acquire sufficient understanding and knowledge to be able to develop an informed interest in matters of scientific importance.

At AS Level, we offer basic fundamental biology units including cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics, immunity, diseases and ecology. At A2 level, we cover areas such as respiration, photosynthesis, evolution, inherited changes, regulation and control in greater detail. Application units in the A2 course include major topics such as bio-diversity and conservation, biotechnology and gene technology. This aims to stimulate students' interest in the local and global environment and to promote their understanding of the need for conservation.

How is the teaching adapted to suit the needs of Chinese students?

It is essential to have a higher level of English for a theoretical science subject like biology. We therefore have to start teaching basic biological concepts parallel to the chemistry units to develop students' interest level and to deal with the theoretical concepts. Students quite often enjoy simple biological experiments more than any other science subject. Once the teacher stimulates students' interest and creates a sustained interest in biology, it is relatively easy to target students to achieve an 'A' grade (even when biology is an additional subject).

Resources

Each student will have at least one reference book and additional reference books are available in the school libraries for both teachers and the students. All our centres have well-equipped laboratories with technician assistants, 3D models and ICT facilities.

The scheme of work is always flexible for students to develop their skills through field trips, projects, extra-curricular clubs and group work etc.

Other information

One of the aims in teaching biology in our centres is to enable students to be suitably prepared for studies in biological sciences, and other science courses, in higher education or in professional courses. The additional benefit is that students gain an understanding of local and global issues that stimulates debate and critical thinking skills.
