A Level Chemistry

Overview of the course

The A-level Chemistry course covers all the major aspects of theoretical chemistry, in addition to having a strong practical component. Time in the laboratory is used not only to develop the students' investigative skills but also to reinforce and illustrate the key concepts.

AS level: a foundation course in Theoretical Chemistry; Physical Chemistry; Organic Chemistry I/II and Inorganic Chemistry.

A2 level: a more in-depth study of topics such as Thermodynamics, Equilibria, Kinetics, Electrochemistry and Aromatic Organic Chemistry.

In the final part of their course students look at some important areas in which chemistry is being used to enhance our lives; in biological systems and medicine, in analysing and designing new materials, and in monitoring and helping to protect the environment.

How is the teaching adapted to suit the needs of Chinese students?

Chinese students generally have high levels of numeracy but poorer practical skills. They also need support in applying their knowledge to new situations. The Chemistry scheme of work has been developed to take these factors into account. In many centres students spend up to 25% of their time in the laboratory, whilst the classroom teaching affords ample opportunity for learning through discussion, group work, and demonstration.

Resources

All centres have access to fully-equipped laboratories with technical support and the vast majority of classrooms have projectors and other ICT resources. A small library of reference books is available for the teaching staff and each student will have their own textbook. The scheme of work provides PowerPoint presentations, student notes, laboratory worksheets and other resources which can be adapted to meet individual needs. Assessment materials are provided at regular intervals throughout the academic year.

Other information

The study of A-level Chemistry requires students to use and develop a number of key skills including: numeracy, planning, analysis, evaluation, problem-solving and group work. An A-level qualification in Chemistry is highly prized both by universities and employers and is a pre-requisite for many courses including medicine, chemical engineering, pharmacy and environmental science.
