A Level Mathematics

Overview of the course

At AS-level, we offer Pure Mathematics 1 (P1) and either Mechanics (M 1) or Statistics (S1). At A2, we offer Pure Mathematics 3 and either Mechanics 1 or Statistics 1 (dependent on the area the students covered at AS level). In Further Mathematics, we offer Further Pure Mathematics and Further Applied Mathematics (mechanics and statistics). Further Mathematics is only offered to outstanding students who have completed their AS and A2 during their first year of A-levels.

We also offer IGCSE extended mathematics to our Pre-A level group (PAL group) and from this academic year (2009- 2010), we have also introduced AS mathematics (Pure Mathematics 1) to this group. Our aim is that they can then sit their A2 Mathematics at the end of their AS year and leave the A2 year for Further Mathematics or re-sits for those who wish to improve on their grades.

How is the teaching adapted to suit the needs of Chinese students?

As English is a second language for our students, we have to explain the mathematical concepts slowly and clearly, with numerous examples used to ensure understanding. The numerical ability of our students is outstanding and the vast majority score high grades in their final year.

Resources

Resources include text books for students and AUTOGRAPH software for the teaching mathematics. The classes are equipped with big screens for laptop connection and over-head projectors.

Other information

Most students have a very strong mathematical background from the Chinese system so many of them require work that is stretching. Homework is highly valued and should be given regularly.
